NASCAR Suspends Austin Dillon Pit Crew Member Indefinitely
NASCAR issued numerous penalties after Sunday’s Autotrader EchoPark Automotive 400, but one which will stand out to NASCAR fans was an indefinite suspension due to violation of substance abuse policy.
According to a NASCAR press release, competition officials issued an indefinite suspension against Nicholas Covey for violating Austin Dillon’s substance abuse policy.
Covey recently served as jackman for Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet No. 3, most recently at Martinsville Speedway on April 7 race. Prior to that he played linebacker at Nebraska from 2005 until 2009.
Autotrader EchoPark Automotive 400 had an exciting finish despite multiple caution flags being displayed during its final stages, forcing double overtime racing to end successfully.
Chase Elliott earned himself the victory comfortably – his first since 2022 – but there was plenty of other interesting action throughout the day, including Kyle Larson being penalized by NASCAR after experiencing an unfortunate mishap with his team.

NASCAR issued Kyle Larson’s pit crew with a penalty after they lost one wheel during a Stage 2 caution at Texas Motor Speedway.
Bob Pockrass of FOX reports that Larson now boasts two new crew members from Hendrick Motorsports; Eric Ludwig as Jackman and Mike Moss as Rear Changer both coming from Hendrick Motorsports’ crew that pits Corey LaJoie.
NASCAR issued two-race suspensions to Brandon Johnson (jack) and Calvin Teague (rear changer) due to their wheel coming off during a race.
Larson will remain suspended through Sunday’s GEICO 500 at Talladega Speedway as well as next weekend’s race at Dover Motor Speedway.
Larson had started off strong before encountering issues that would put an end to his race day.
Larson led early but was later penalized with two laps on pit road due to losing a wheel on track during a caution. Larson reported feeling as though he had a flat tire before his right rear wheel came loose during Stage 2 cautions and came off.

After the weekend’s racing action at Texas Motor Speedway, there was an extensive list of infractions on the NASCAR Weekly Penalty Report. Eight suspensions were included as part of this total.
As anticipated, two members from Kyle Larson’s No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports NASCAR Cup Series team have been suspended for the next two points-paying races due to a detached wheel during caution at Sunday’s Autotrader EchoPark Automotive 400 at Texas.
Calvin Teague and Brandon Johnson, rear tire changer and jackman respectively, violated sections 8.8.10.4.C of the NASCAR Cup Series Rule Book.
Though only two suspensions were expected on the penalty report, four team members from three NASCAR Cup Series teams and one NASCAR Xfinity Series team have been suspended for Safety Violations related to their Crew Protective Clothing and Equipment at Talladega Superspeedway this weekend.
Zachary Yager was identified as violating Section 14.3.1.2 A-D during an audit conducted on Chris Buescher’s No. 17 RFK Racing team while Jacob Holmes served in his capacity of tire carrier on Christopher Bell’s No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing team and Doug Warrick as Jackman on Austin Hill’s No. 33 Richard Childress Racing team.
