Garib Rath Express was launched in 2005 by the Indian railways as a fully air conditioned cheaper train service. The name Garib Rath means the ‘Poor Man’s Chariot’, thus it was aimed to provide cheaper accommodation than the regular AC trains.
The concept of Garib Rath was to offer customers of middle class the comfort of an air-conditioned train at relatively cheaper and affordable fares than Rajdhani or Shatabdi Express. The comforts like charging points, seat design, and bio toilets are amongst the specious facilities provided for the passengers in the trains. However, in order to maintain the price affordable some of the amenities such as bedding are excluded from the fare.
At first there was a welcoming of Garib Rath trains as it provide a facility which was normally not available between non-AC sleeper classes coaches and the costly AC classes. The service was initially only for the Mumbai Delhi route but over the years it extended to other routes connecting many other Indian cities and is for the budget traveller.
However, there are some complaints as well, such as no provision of bedding and lesser seat area; yet Garib Rath has been appreciated much and provides reasonable comfort at a reasonable price.
